London City-New York JFK business only flights celebrate second anniversary

Good business … onboard the London City-New York JFK flights

British Airways’ business-only flight from London City to New York JFK has marked its second year.

When the airline introduced the flights on 29 September 2009, many industry analysts predicted that the service  would be a failure.

“Despite the economic downturn, there is no doubt that the service has become a firm favourite with many of our customers on the important London – New York route,” says Richard Tams, British Airways’ head of UK & Ireland sales and marketing.

“With easy access from the City and Canary Wharf, a 15-minute check-in to departure, in-flight texting and internet access, it has been tailor-made to provide them with the most productive way to fly across the Atlantic.”

Since launch, BA claims that 97 per cent of the flights have departed on time from London City and 90 per cent on time from New York. The BA business-only flights are flown by the Airbus A318 aircraft, which has 32 fully flat seats. Business travellers have the benefit of 15-minute check-in to departure and US customs clearance in Shannon, Ireland, where the flight stops westward for brief refuelling.

Passengers are also given 64GB iPads loaded with bespoke inflight entertainment. BA cabin crew also use the iPads to offer travel arrangements for passengers. Information such as service updates, timetables and destination airport information, as well as any special meal requests is stored on the devices.

The airline, which is currently advertising on TV, online and in print as part of a major brand campaign, flies eight times daily to New York JFK from Heathrow and three times a day to Newark.

- BA announced this week that passengers flying from London to Moscow Domodedevo Airport on direct flights will be able to book First and Business Class seats from next April. Currently, no other airline offers such a premium service on the four-hour flight between London and Moscow.
