New Icelandic airline announces flights to UK

New Icelandic airline WOW Air is to start flying to the UK from next summer, the Icelandic Tourist Board has announced.

WOW Air is a brand new airline, and will be flying from London Stansted Airport to Keflavik Airport in Reykjavik on 1 June 2012.

The new route will operate three times a week – on a Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Prices will start at £53 one-way and can be booked at wowair.is.

WOW Air will also fly to several other European destinations from Iceland, including Alicante, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, Krakow, Lyon, Stuttgart, and Zurich.

WOW Air is not the only airline to offer low-cost flights to Iceland from the UK, as easyJet announced a new service to the country earlier this month.

The route, due to start on 21 March 2012, will fly from Luton Airport to Keflavik Airport three times a week – on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Prices start at £32.99 for a one-way ticket and £58.81 for a return fare, including taxes. Tickets are on sale now at www.easyJet.com.

“It is hugely exciting to be able to offer easyJet flights to Iceland for the very first time,” said Paul Simmons, easyJet’s UK Director.

“Our new route will not only be attractive for business travellers, but also for those looking for culture-rich city breaks or adventurous travellers looking for unrivalled scenery and activities.”

The new routes from both airlines mean UK customers will have access to six cheap flights a week to Iceland.

Sigga Gróa, the marketing manager of the UK & Ireland for the Icelandic Tourist Board, said: “We are delighted that easyJet and WOW Air are increasing accessibility to Iceland and hope that the additional flights will further increase our rising visitor numbers.

“We want to show visitors that they can come to Iceland for adventure, spas, culture, active sports and nightlife in just a short flight from home.”
