MAS to buy as many as 55 narrowbodies

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) plans to announce a large order later today for narrowbodies.

Industry sources tell ATI that MAS plans to make an announcement today after the close of the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange.

Malaysia’s newspapers, quoting from unidentified sources in Malaysia, say Boeing has won the narrowbody order over Airbus and that the airline plans to buy as many as 55 Boeing 737-800s.

The first new aircraft on order will be delivered in 2011, say the reports.

The national carrier currently operates 37 737-400s, most of which were built around 1992 according to Flight’s ACAS database.
