Brazilian regional carrier TRIP Linhas Aereas yesterday announced a $167.5 million firm order for five Embraer 175 jets.

The value of the deal could rise to more than $1 billion if the carrier exercises options for 10 more E-175, plus purchase rights for another 15.

Trip plans to start operating the new jets starting in 2009 with a single-class configuration seating 86 passengers.

Seating capacity “was decisive for us, since we are a regional airline and, for that reason, we need a fleet of aircraft with fewer seats in order to serve our markets and maintain our operations,” says Jose Mario Caprioli, president and founder of TRIP.

As of 31 March, Embraer had received 835 firm orders for the four aircraft that comprise the Embraer 170</A
