Still reeling from record high fuel prices, the airline sector had to battle against a huge drop in air travel demand - particularly in the premium sector - as the global recession took its toll in 2009. Against this backdrop IATA expects the collective loss for the global airline industry to total $11 billion for the last 12 months. No region or sector was left unscathed by the crisis, but while some regions ended the year amid encouraging signs of improvement, for others recovery still looks some distance away.
